Here’s one of my favorite examples: During one of the early rounds of the 2016 Masters, the PGA Tour on Facebook wanted to show a green jacket, a group of golfers and Augusta National. Instead of using a long-form ad, the PGA Tour chose to show one man wearing the green jacket eating, which gave viewers the impression that the green jacket would be awarded to him. But this green jacket ad was created for free by a European Golf ad agency, which was then paid through Facebook. This is a prime example of why golf companies and their advertising agencies are afraid to use any medium to promote themselves because it feels like a big risk and a big loss. Another example: In 2006 at the BMW Championship, Doral placed a $100,000 buy-in to a big-name single-elimination match play golf event, with winner taking home a $1 million prize. But the event had never existed before and it attracted only a few thousand entries. Sponsorship money was not adequate to cover the $100,000 buy-in cost. And how many of the poor golfers participating in the match were aware they were playing for a million bucks? How many people tuned in? Probably not many. Well, those in the sponsorship world are working with golfers, media and fans to increase revenue. For example, in 2014, Emirates Airline offered free air tickets for all fans who watched it’s “Rising Stars” show. Other golf events like Fox Golf’s The Match Up are trying to do the same thing. And advertisers are taking notice. In the marketing world, they call this “positioning.” It’s a fancy way to describe taking advantage
of an opportunity. You already know that golf is an important, but underdeveloped market. By attracting new advertisers, golf companies are building on this already existing audience. So, when it comes to the internet, advertisers are vying to get to that potential market
